Get Healthy Skin With Chinese Medicine & Facial Micro-needling

A woman smiling with face care products on her face while making a peace sign with her hand.

Do you feel like you have tried every product, skincare routine, prescription, or spa treatment for your skin concerns but still aren't getting the results you want? If you are practicing good skin hygiene, drinking plenty of water, and working hard to clear up, brighten and tighten your skin but STILL suffer from stubborn acne, redness, uneven skin tone, dark spots, dry/oily skin, eczema or even fungal infection, this post is for you!

Skin issues can be extremely painful, frustrating, uncomfortable and expensive– many products claim to offer a magic bullet solution, but don’t deliver results. And some skin conditions are persistent, appearing to resolve temporarily but then returning again after a course of treatment ends. If you’ve tried it all and are still struggling with persistent skin issues, we are here to help!

In Chinese medicine, skin conditions are often related to:

  • The Spleen organ: responsible for transforming the food that we eat into nourishing fluids that are then vaporized in the Lung organ in order to lubricate the skin, regulate the skin’s moisture barrier, and control functions like sweating and opening and closing of the pores. When this process is disrupted, the Spleen is unable to adequately nourish and detoxify the skin chronic skin conditions such as eczema (AKA atopic dermatitis), breakouts in the mouth and chin area, food-related breakouts or skin allergies, and other stubborn skin issues. The Spleen is also the source of nutrition for making Blood– see the last item in this list for why Blood is vital for healthy skin.

  • The Lung organ: rules the skin. The Lung organ is paired with the Large Intestine organ in Chinese medicine. This highlights the direct connection between our gut health, skin conditions, and immune system function. The skin can be seen as a report card for how well these two important organs are working to take in new nourishment (think Lungs breathing in clean air) and eliminating old waste (the Large Intestine’s job).

  • The Liver organ: key for detoxification of the Blood, healthy digestion and smooth and healthy flow of Blood and Qi throughout the body. Sluggish Liver function is often the hidden culprit behind chronic acne and other skin conditions, especially when symptoms are worsened by stress. This can include some autoimmune skin conditions such as psoriasis and persistent acne located anywhere on the body.

  • Quantity and Quality of Blood: in Chinese medicine, skin health is directly related to the quantity and quality of the Blood. Blood deficiency can lead to dry, scaly, easily broken skin that heals slowly and/or has a dull, yellowish “sallow” tint to it. Blood stagnation often manifests in the skin as painful, nodular acne that leaves behind stubborn, dark scars or dark colored patches on the skin that are usually painful and may be itchy. Blood heat and blood toxicity due to poor Liver organ function can cause itchy, red, irritated skin lesions and rashes and bright red breakouts that are painful to the touch.

At Mind + Body, we offer treatments that address immediate concerns while also going after the root causes of chronic skin complaints.

  • Acupuncture helps to clear accumulated dampness and heat out of the body by regulating the digestive system, reducing oxidative stress that leads to inflammation, and promoting healthy nervous system function.

  • Facial microneedling helps stimulate the body’s natural inflammatory response to boost circulation to the skin and encourage collagen production and  improve lymphatic drainage, resulting in skin that is firmer, brighter and more clear of breakouts. It is highly effective for stubborn skin spots, rosacea, wrinkles, fine lines, large pores, and more. Our resident micro-needling expert is Lisa Jones, has over 7 years of experience treating skin concerns with microneedling and nanoneedling.

  • Chinese herbal medicine is extremely effective in helping to clear out pathogenic factors that are the root causes of hard-to-treat skin conditions. Herbs used in Chinese herbal treatment of skin have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal and protective functions that help clear away excess dampness, heat and toxicity from the body naturally. Herbs with nourishing, replenishing and adaptogenic functions support the skin’s natural moisture barrier, help repair damage and provide deep healing at the source of disease, helping the body to return to optimum function and maintain lasting results.

Added bonus: using acupuncture and herbs to clear excess dampness, heat and other pathogenic factors from your body while nourishing the Lung, Spleen and Liver organs produces many benefits in addition to improved skin health, such as:

  • Better sleep

  • Improved ability to cope with and manage stresses of daily life

  • Improved emotional regulation: less moodiness and irritability

  • Improved digestion: reduced gas/bloating, bowel regularity, boosted metabolism

  • Calmer periods: reduced PMS, cramping, and mood disturbances around the cycle
